Start of General Availability in .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА

December 1, General Availability launched in .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА. Now anyone can choose a name in Moscow's TLDs and register it at a fixed price.

.MOSCOW and .МОСКВА had three domain name registration stages: At first domain names were available for trademarks owners and owners of Moscow's trade names and mass media outlets, as well as for government authorities. Some large Russian and international brands got their domain names during that period: Apple, Gucci, Rolex, McDonald`s, Winzavod, Invitro, etc. Then there was an 8-week Landrush period — open for all, but with higher prices. During that period, the following names were registered among others: аренда.москва [], кино.москва [], [],, фотография.москва [], прачечная.москва [],, [], etc.

2,500 domain names were reserved for the needs of the city of Moscow, which are now being transferred to the Moscow Government by the registry operator — Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technologies and Infrastructure Development (FAITID).

The new TLDs already have full-on websites, for example,,, мэр.москва [],, and город.москва [].

11,500 applications for .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА domain names were processed during the first 24 hours of General Availability. Including the Sunrise and Landrush periods, .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА have over 15,000 registered domain names so far. That number is expected to grow to 20,000-25,000 by the end of 2014, which is slightly less than what .BERLIN and .LONDON (the most popular city TLDs) have, but more than the numbers reached by the TLDs of Tokyo, Vienna, Hamburg, Cologne, etc.

Dmitry Burkov, FAITID Chairman of the Board, said: "Moscow's TLDs have 15 accredited registrars, including four Russian registrars. We expect that a few other registrars will be accredited by the end of 2014, while in 2015 their number may double. Also, we expect that GoDaddy, one of the world's largest registrars, will get accredited with us, too."

So far, about 80% of all the registered .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА domain names were registered by RU-CENTER, the largest domain name registrar in Russia. "We initiated the introduction of top-level domains for the Russian capital back in 2010," says Andrey Vorobyev, RU-CENTER's PR and GR Director. "We have been heavily promoting .MOSCOW and .МОСКВА, so it's not surprising that today RU-CENTER is the leading registrar for these domains."
