ICANN Approved New gTLD - the Program Necessary to Implement RUCLID Top-Level Domains

On 20 June 2011 the 41st ICANN International Public Meeting has started. During the first day of the event New gTLD program was approved by the ICANN Board.

It took 7 years to devise the process, for this period more than 1000 comments from the Internet community were recieved. 13 ICANN Board representatives voted for New gTLD, two abstained and just one was against.

Before the voting some members of the Board said they are confident that New gTLD launch will help to devise competition as well as act as a platform for innovations. The success of the procedure will depend on the support from local Internet communities.

The first application round according to New gTLD will start in January 2012 and finish in April 2012. In November 2012 ICANN will publish the list of successfull applicants. Then contracts with them will be signed and in the beginning of 2013 approved TLDs will be delegated.

The launch of New gTLD process means practical start for RUCLID project.

"Russia is an active participant of New gTLD procedure. Today all major players of the local domain name market announced their plans to participate in the process. At the moment RU-CENTER consults different types of applicatns: cities, cultural and linguistic communities, commercial companies. In our country we have many regions representing plenty of nations, cultures and languages that are already stated they are intrested in getting their own top-level domain according to New gTLD. That's why RUCLID initiative is quite significant", - says Andrey Vorobyev, the head of external relations and communications at RU-CENTER, the registrar that initiated the implementation of Russian cultural and linguistic Internet domains.
